Last night, VMware released Fusion 4.1. You can update your installation by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the title bar. You can also go straight to the download here. As always, here’s the What’s New section from the release notes:

Smart Full Screen

Full screen mode provides better productivity and consistency with Mac OS X Lion than previous versions.

The Lion full-screen button is used in virtual machine windows.

The Lion full-screen keyboard shortcut (Cmd-Control-F) is now supported in addition to Cmd-Control-Return.

Like other full-screen Lion applications, a VMware Fusion virtual machine moves to a new space when all displays are connected to the virtual machine.

Switching to Full Screen mode on a secondary display uses the whole display but does not create a new space, which enables you to work in other Mac applications while the virtual machine makes full use of the secondary display.

The VMware Fusion menu bar and toolbar are now accessible from Full Screen mode. A short delay in showing the menu allows access the top of the virtual machine screen, particularly when running Mac OS X Lion in a virtual machine.

A redesigned, compact minibar that you can drag for quick access to common actions without leaving Full Screen mode.

Automatic virtual machine power on

Virtual machines can now be powered on automatically when VMware Fusion starts. You can override this setting by holding Shift when VMware Fusion starts. This feature was removed in VMware Fusion 4 but is now available in VMware Fusion 4.1 in the General settings for every virtual machine.

Improved animations

Improved animations for full screen mode, unity mode, library and snapshots.

Fast screen resizing and improved startup time

Faster screen resizing (Microsoft Hotfix 2522761 recommended), faster transitions into Unity and Full Screen modes, and improved startup time with Windows 7 virtual machines.

Improved Mac OS X Lion guest operating system support

Improved Mac OS X Lion virtual machine support including smoother mouse movements and support for File Vault 2 when using Mac OS X 10.7.2 or later. Upated VMware Tools disable sleep on older versions of Mac OS X virtual machines.

Improved graphics performance

Improved graphics performance and correctness for Internet Explorer 9 and Solidworks 2012 and improved graphics performance when using Mac OS X 10.7.2.

VMware Fusion 4.1 also resolves the following issues:

An intermittent problem when plugging in a new USB device that resulted in error 4.

Improved support for resizing NTFS formatted disks.

An intermittent issue connecting USB devices attached via a Thunderbolt display.

An intermittent issue installing Mac OS X Lion from physical media.

Improved compatibility of shared folders for many applications.

An issue installing VMware Tools on Ubuntu 11.10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.7.

A graphics rendering issue on some Mac Pro systems with very large amounts of memory

A graphics rendering issue specific to some non-English languages.

An intermittent problem when using the migration assistant on Mac OS X 10.7.2.

Spurious activation messages when using Boot Camp virtual machines on some systems.

Some nice new items in this one. If you like, you can proceed straight to the download here. Here’s the what’s new section from the release notes:

VMware View 4.6 includes the following new features:

Security servers can now accommodate PCoIP connections – Security servers now include a PCoIP Secure Gateway component. The PCoIP Secure Gateway connection offers the following advantages:

The only remote desktop traffic that can enter the corporate data center is traffic on behalf of a strongly authenticated user.

Users can access only the desktop resources that they are authorized to access.

No VPN is required, as long as PCoIP is not blocked by any networking component.

Security servers with PCoIP support run on Windows Server 2008 R2 and take full advantage of the 64-bit architecture.

Enhanced USB device compatibility - View 4.6 supports USB redirection for syncing and managing iPhones and iPads with View desktops. This release also includes improvements for using USB scanners, and adds to the list of USB printers that you can use with thin clients. For more information, see the list of View Client resolved issues.

Keyboard mapping improvements - Many keyboard-related issues have been fixed. For more information, see the list of View Client resolved issues.

New timeout setting for SSO users - With the single-sign-on (SSO) feature, after users authenticate to View Connection Server, they are automatically logged in to their View desktop operating systems. This new timeout setting allows administrators to limit the number of minutes that the SSO feature is valid for.

For example, if an administrator sets the time limit to 10 minutes, then 10 minutes after the user authenticates to View Connection Server, the automatic login ability expires. If the user then walks away from the desktop and it becomes inactive, when the user returns, the user is prompted for login credentials. For more information, see the VMware View Administration documentation.

VMware View 4.6 includes more than 160 bug fixes – For descriptions of selected resolved issues, see Resolved Issues.

Experimental support for Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 RC operating systems

vShield 4.1.0 Update 1 has been released (why not call it 4.1.1?). You can download the updated release here. I’ve also copied the What’s New section from the release notes:

vShield 4.1.0 Update 1 adds the following features.

SpoofGuard: SpoofGuard allows you to authorize or alter the IP addresses of your virtual machines as reported by VMware Tools. Operating separately from the App Firewall rules, you can use SpoofGuard to block traffic determined to be from a spoofed IP address. You must upgrade your vShield App instances to vShield 1.0.0 Update 1 before enabling SpoofGuard.

vShield Edge Upgrade: You can upgrade vShield Edge software from the vSphere Client or via REST API.

My take on it: SpoofGuard sounds like a nice little feature to have. I’ll do a little testing in the lab and report back on that one. Even if the name of the feature sounds like something to prevent you from spilling water on the floor.

I found an interesting issue in the lab today and I think it’s very important that users who have View deployed recognize it. In researching the issue, I came across this note in the View 4.5 documentation: “View Manager can manage persistent disks from linked-clone pools that were created in View Manager 4.5. Persistent disks that were created in earlier versions of View Manager cannot be managed and do not appear on the Persistent Disks page in View Administrator.”

Before today, I did not know that. What this means is that if you have an existing View 4.0 pool of desktops that use user data disks, 4.5 will not recognize them as persistent disks when you upgrade. Here’s how I found out: View 4.5 has a new feature called “Disposable File Redirection” where it can put the windows swap file and default temp directory on it’s own virtual disk. When creating a pool with the wizard it looks like this:

This is a great feature because when you create a linked clone pool the windows swap could increase the size of the linked clone by 2-4GB on first boot of the OS when the guest OS creates the swap file. By seperating the temp and swap file to another virtual disk, you can keep the linked clone with the Guest OS small and more efficient. So I wanted to take my user data disk from my desktop in the old pool (Created on View 4.0) and move it over to a new desktop pool built under View 4.5. I selected my desktop in the old pool and clicked “Remove…” This presented me the option to save my persistant disk to another datastore and destroy the rest of the desktop files.

Perfect, I thought, move my user data and then pick it up later. The wizard allowed me to select the option to move persistent disks to another datastore, I choose it and click to continue without an error or warning of any kind. As I waited, watching the destination datastore I had selected, nothing appeared. Looking back thru the vCenter logs, View had deleted my desktop but did not do anything with the user data disk, my user data disk was deleted with the rest of the desktop. It seems that upgrading to 4.5 does not convert user data disks to persistent disks (as mentioned in the doc above). I believe this is a problem when the wizards do not warn you at all that they are not one in the same.

Some good news however, I did find a procedure that works to migrate my users. Please note that I am guessing that this is not supported by VMware due to the note from the docs listed above. Hopefully we will get a KB article with a supported procedure soon.

Create a new pool of desktops and create it from the same snap as your old pool (View 4.5 will use the existing replica if you do that – very smart). Select user assignment for desktops (not floating) and make sure to use a seperate disk for temp and swap files like the first screenshot above.

Kick your user out of their old VM if they are in it and put that desktop in Maintenance Mode. (Under inventory, select desktops, select their desktop / more commands/ enter maintenance mode) This is so they can’t sneak in on you while you are working on it.

Go into vCenter and shut down their old VM. If the VM is in a suspended state, power on the VM and then shutdown the guest OS. You want their desktop VM in a completely powered off state.

Get a copy of the User Data disk. I did this easily by cloning the VM to another datastore. Recognize that you’ll need to know the size or name of the user data disk vmdk file. The name of the vmdk has “user-disk” in it. The easiest way is to look it up in the datastore browser and write/remember it’s size.

In View Manager, go to the persistent section and click the detached tab at the top of the right pane

Click the “Import from vCenter” button

Select your vCenter server, the datastore containing your copy of your VM. The new linked clone pool that you are going to add it to, the view folder to put it in, the file itself (here select the user data disk where you copied it to. Mine was only 4GB in size so it was easy to determine the user data disk vmdk.) Lastly select the user that owns this persistent disk i.e. Who’s was it in the old pool?

Now that you have the detached persistent disk imported, you can select the persistent disk and click the “Recreate Desktop” button. Note: the user associated with the persistent disk cannot have an asigned desktop in the new pool already.

Once the new desktop is created with the persistent disk, select pools on the left pane and double-click the new pool you created. Go to the inventory tab on the right and select the desktop that you just created. When it is highlighted, select the “View Composer” drop down and select rebalance. This will rebalance the desktop and move the persistent disk file to the correct datastore and directory that it is supposed to be in.

Now make sure your user is entitled to the new pool (View 4.5 will automatically assign the VM to them) and you may optionally remove their entitlement to their old pool (so they are not confused by two similar desktops when they login).

Once all of this is completed, you can allow your user to connect in and test. They should have their desktop in a just-refreshed condition.

When everything checks out ok, you can go remove their desktop from the old pool.

I can’t stress enough that this procedure may not be supported by VMware. If/when they post a KB article on this topic, I will be sure to link it here. I hope this helps out anyone that may have 4.0 Desktops with User-Data disks and upgrade. Moving the user-data to the 4.5 friendly persistent disks adds a lot of flexibility for your users in the future.

We utilize VMware View for all of our demos at RoundTower. We’ve also given desktops to a few of our sales reps if they need to do some work in the lab. One of them came to me recently and asked, “How can I send files to and from my desktop?” A simple question. My immediate thought was to connect a thumb drive to the endpoint and USB map the device to the VM and it should so up as a virtual disk, right? Well yes it does, trying to explain this procedure to a sales rep was met with some resistance. There were multiple steps involved. I thought about it for a minute and suggested Dropbox.

The engineers at RoundTower have used Dropbox for a while. Those with a iPhone or iPad typically know about it. It allows you to run a small piece of software on your PC or Mac and sync a directory and everything in it between any and all machines that you have the agent installed on. Let me explain, theres a directory on your harddrive and everything you put in it gets copied to a storage cloud over https. If you have it installed and another PC (or Mac) the files will immediately copy down to the directory on that computer. If you delete the file from either side, it automatically removes it from the other. It could be a slew of devices and they all automatically sync the directory. Great stuff if you want to move files to multiple locations. You get 2GB for free to try it and can sign up here.

Back to my problem. I sent the rep the link to sign up and then explained briefly how to install the agent on his laptop. I took the liberty of installing it on the base image of our desktop pool and recomposed the pool. I can report that Dropbox works great with user data disks by default. All of the settings are stored in the user hive of the registry and the default replicated directory is underneath My Documents. Perfect setup. The rep called me back a little later to report that it had worked great and he could move his files back and forth easily to work on them.

A couple of caveats to look out for if you do decide to try this combination:

Make sure your storage has enough room. We use 2GB user data disks. Dropbox starts at 2GB so a user could easily fill the data disk if they store too much in their remote dropbox. It will not fill the disk completely and will warn you if it gets close but the user may not pay attention.

Make sure your company allows their information to be shared with the cloud in this manner. Some companies are very sensitive to their documentation and will not permit it. Never expect your users to police themselves.

Make sure that your users understand that you do not support docs in the cloud. If they delete something that’s in it by accident, they will be responsible to restore it. They can restore deleted files for a short time by logging in at dropbox.com.

For smaller lab environments like ours, it’s a great solution to move files back and forth easily and quickly. I highly recommend it.

In the past, I have reviewed all of the technical papers on the VMware site. I’ve decided to change direction a little and I only plan on reviewing papers that would apply to the everyday VM Admin. I’m also going to throw in my own ranking on each article (*****, 1 to 5 stars). You will also notice a “vKeeper” reference in some of the papers. This award is for the papers that I keep a local copy of on my computer for reference when I need them. They are the docs that all admins should read thru and use as a reference as needed. I have also added a section to my admin bookmark page just for the vKeeper docs.

PCoIP Display Protocol: Information and Scenario-Based Network Sizing Guide – (12 pages) A good paper with very good insight on the PCoIP protocol used in VMware View. It gives some good suggestions and the required bandwidths needed to satisfy the end users on their desktop experience. A must have for view deployments. (****, 4 of 5 stars)

Application Presentation to VMware View Desktops with Citrix XenApp – (3 pages) This is a whitepaper to show how to deploy applications in VMware View desktops from XenApp. While I can see this being useful for View admins who use XenApp, the description and instructions are very minimal. Probably something better suited for a KB article. (**, 2 of 5 stars)

Timekeeping in VMware Virtual Machines – (26 pages) This is a very important topic for all VM Admins to know. Time is relevant to everything in a VM, whether you are trying to authenticate to Active Directory or troubleshooting using event logs, accurate time is very important. This paper goes into some really great detail on how VMware maintains accurate time in VMs. If you are a VMware admin, this should be a standard read. (*****, 5 of 5 stars, vKeeper)

SAN System Design and Deployment Guide – (244 pages of storage goodness) I have a storage background so I specifically enjoy this one. If you are running ESX on SAN shared storage (you should be on some type of shared storage) then this is a must read. This whitepaper is also very helpful if you are studying for the VCP or one of the new VCAP exams. This is another paper I keep local and definitely one all VM admins with SAN should review. (*****, 5 of 5 stars, vKeeper)

Best Practices for Running vSphere on NFS Storage – (14 pages) On the heels of the SAN design and deployment guide, this paper describes the best practices for running NFS on vSphere. I like the fact that this article references outdated best practices that have changed and why they have changed. This is a HUGE help to admins who google a topic only to find conflicting information. My only regret on this paper is that I would like to see more detail on the advanced options and how they affect the performance of NFS. Still a important doc for VM Admins using NFS storage. Should be reviewed by all of them to make sure they are current in their deployment of NFS best practices. (****, 4 of 5 stars)

Location Awareness in VMware View 4 – (8 pages) Good information for View Admins to know where to find out where their clients are connecting from. This is a common request from hospitals to have printers “follow the user” as they float from terminal to terminal. There are some advanced topics in this article and some Active Directory knowledge is definitely required especially when using loopback mode in group policy processing. Good info and hopefully View will include some GUI-based native features in the future to assist with this. (***, 3 of 5 stars)

VMware vSphere 4.0 Security Hardening Guide – (70 pages) This is a outstanding reference for any VM Admin. Security affects everyone’s environment, from the 3-man shop to the largest infrastructure. Setting the precedence of a solid, secure enviornment from the ground up will provide you with a infrastructure that is solid as a rock. I recommend reviewing this paper often and keeping this one handy (*****, 5 of 5 stars, vKeeper)

VMware vStorage Virtual Machine File System – Technical Overview and Best Practices – (13 pages) This is a entry level paper on some of the very basics of VMFS and how they relate to RDMs. This should be a good introduction to VMFS to new VM Admins. I hoped with “Best Practices” in the title that there would be more technical references (advanced options for VMFS and how tweaking them affects the storage performance for instance). I was also disappointed to see the LUN size question answered vaguely, suggesting to refer to the storage vendor to size your LUNs appropriately. I prefer Duncan’s approach to LUN sizing and it’s what I recommend to all of my customers. (***, 3 of 5 stars)

Look for the vPaper Report again next quarter (hopefully with some new releases in between). Until then, happy reading!

Workload Considerations for Virtual Desktop Reference Architectures Info Guide – Great paper on the RAWC (Reference Architectures Workload Code) tool. It allows you to simulate desktop workloads in VM’s to help size them in a VDI deployment.

VMware Workstation has been enhanced for performance and to take advantage of the new Windows 7 features including Live Thumbnails and Aero Peek.

Aero Glass — A new Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) graphics driver has been developed for Windows Vista and Windows 7 virtual machines. The WDDM driver can display the Windows Aero user interface, OpenGL 1.4, and Shader Model 3.0. For more information on the VMware recommended graphics hardware, see the VMware Workstation User’s Manual.

VMware Workstation enables the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to take advantage of more than one processor, render high-end graphics, integrate seamlessly with Unity, and transfer files easily with drag and drop, and shared folders. VMware Workstation also has the ability to run concurrently with Windows XP Mode.

3D Graphics Improvements for Windows XP guests — OpenGL 2.1 and Shader Model 3.0 support is now available for Windows XP virtual machines. The XPDM (SVGAII) graphics driver works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. However, only Windows XP virtual machines install the XPDM graphics driver by default. To switch graphics drivers in the guest operating system, see How to Switch Between SVGAII and WDDM Drivers.

VMware Certified Professionals (VCPs) and technical professionals can install the latest server virtualization software and experiment with server setup, conduct training, show demos, and test production configurations. Running ESX as a guest eliminates the need to have spare hardware available to run ESX natively and enables ESX to run on systems that are not listed on the ESX hardware compatibility list (HCL). For more information on the supported processors and host operating systems, see Considerations for Running an ESX Guest.
This feature is intended for educational and demonstration purposes only and should not be used in production environments. To use this feature, you must download vSphere 4.0 from the VMware Web site and follow the installation documentation provided with vSphere to install ESX.

I was going over the KB digest this morning and saw a few KB articles that hit home with a couple issues that customers have been asking me about regarding View.

The first is wondering how an admin can do more advanced things with the View Manager Server. For instance: assign a default desktop out of a pool to a specific user or listing orphaned desktops (users that no longer exist or have changed permissions and no longer have access to a desktop in a pool but still have one assigned to them) or cleaning up after removing a secondary View Manager server. All of these items can be performed by a little-known command line utility included in View called vdmadmin.exe. vdmadmin.exe can do all of the things mentioned. The tool is installed by default with view in the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\bin directory. You can read all of the details about the tool and all of the command options here . "Why is this a command-line tool?" you ask. When features are requested for the GUI, a programmer has to create and test the GUI options which takes a lot of time. The product manager has to decide what features will make in into the released product and still keep it on time for release. Sometime features or controls don’t make it but are still important. A developer can write a command line executable and they are much easier to test as the command line either works or it does not. The Quality Assurance process is much easier for command line utilities.

Another tool that’s good to know is sviconfig.exe. It’s located on the vCenter server where you install composer in the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View Composer directory. This tool allows you to unlock protected entities in vCenter. For instance, if a user checks out a VM offline, it gets protected in vCenter so that an admin cannot accidentally delete it or power it on and make changes. If the admin needs to make changes to it for some reason they can use the sviconfig tool to unlock that VM.

There’s also a few other topics that come up frequently. Here are a few:

Can you protect View Desktops with Site Recovery Manager? Unfortunately, SRM is not "View aware" as yet. The work is underway however. Tommy Walker from VMware (one of the best @ VMware) has written a blueprint with EMC on how to accomplish this task (although experimental at this point). It’s pretty interesting reading and I’m very hopeful that we’ll see native integration coming. You can read the very detailed blueprint here (registration required).

What features do I get with thin client "x"? With the different number of options available for View Thin Clients there’s also a number of different thin client OS options. Here is a great matrix of what features you get with each View client that is available. Good information to know when picking out thin clients

How can I make location-aware desktops? This is a common question. How can I make a specific thin client map a specific printer, etc based on the thin client location? The answer: Client Information Variables. Here’s a nice writeup on some basic scripting that can determine the variables and make appropriate decisions based on their values.

Can I use group policy to control the client or desktop agent? You bet. You can find the administrative templates for group policy in the C:\Program Files\VMware\View Manager\Server\Extras\GroupPolicyFiles directory. If you’re not too sure about using adm files, here’s a kb article from Microsoft on how to use and manage them. There are 4 included with View: vdm-agent.adm to control the agent in the guest OS, vdm_client.adm to control the properties of the View client, vdm_server.adm to control the connection broker and vdm_common.adm for common View components across all of View. A very detailed list of the options of each can be found in the View admin guide starting on page 176.

I read an article last night and felt the need to make the virtualization community aware of it. It does not directly affect virtualization but it does affect our users and certainly our desktop admins.

Microsoft provided a chart to Walt Mossburg, a writer for the Wall Street Journal. It was a chart showing the upgrade options for users of XP and Vista and what options then had when upgrading. Walt felt the need to blog on the topic due to the complexity of the chart and limited options for some users.
You can read his entire article here or just take a quick look at the chart he posted here.

What amazes me (and Walt) is that there are 66 cells on this chart and only 14 of them are “in-place” upgrades. 52 of the cells are “custom install” Now I will be the first to concede that the majority of the users will fall into the 14 cells. However, if you were considering changing edition or moving to 64-bit when you went to Windows 7 the upgrade may not be very friendly. That means the users (or admins) must move their data off, install from scratch, and reinstall all their apps and copy their data back. Yikes.

Seeing an opportunity to poke a little fun, the guys over at cultofmac.com posted some similar charts for OSX. Pretty funny for a Monday morning.

After 17 years in the PC industry I have finished my conversion to my first Mac. I can remember my days at Limited Brands when the design department used them religiously. 11 PC people with me on staff at Victoria’s Secret back in those days and we had to outsource the support of the Macs. Surely none of us wanted to touch them. Now, 10 years later, I find myself on one.

My decision to go to a Macbook was not based on “the cool factor”. It was 3 things for me: battery life, reliability, and sturdyness (I’m a bit rough on laptops). Boasting a battery life of 7 hours seemed to good to be true but I was able to run 6 with no problem on my initial test. Reliability was becoming a problem with my old laptop. It was a Lenovo X61. Nice and small but it could no longer cool itself effectively. Running a demo or a intensive webex would get the CPU too hot and it would go into standby mode randomly to protect itself and not let itself out until it cooled down. Not very fun as it happened the last two times while I was on a Webex showing our software to a customer. Sturdyness, I cracked the screen of my first x61. The second and final one had a broken off PCMCIA slot door, and a chip off the base corner. I really liked the aluminum shell. I liked the fact that I can hold the laptop by the corner while open and the case does not flex from the stress.

Yes I paid a premium for it, but I was getting tired of all of the windows B.S. Don’t get me wrong, windows is a great OS. I hear great things are coming in Windows 7 and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing some of them. I can’t wait to get my hands on it to load it into Fusion and play with the new features. However, as for my base OS, I’m going to give OSX a try for a while. I’ve been lucky enough to learn in my off time on my wife’s Mac I bought for her about 8 months ago. Her laptop was dying and I was tired of being the “helpdesk” for every issue. Getting a Mac was a great idea, supposedly easy to use and reliable. Besides, whenever she would ask me for help I could use the “I don’t know Macs” excuse (for future reference, this only works for about the first month, she stopped buying it after that.) So I would use her laptop on the evenings and weekends to understand it better. I found myself asking her if I could use it instead of my own. That’s when I knew I was getting hooked.

I was given the green light about 2 weeks ago. I went down to the local Apple store in Columbus. I really did not need the pitch or to ask any questions. Any self-respecting geek researches every possible technical question before going to a store to buy a computer. What I wanted to know is can I get one with a bigger-than standard hard drive in the store. Unfortunately, the answer is no, not in the store. They can add RAM for you but that’s it. If you want to upgrade the CPU or the hard drive or digress from the standard models in any other way but RAM, you have to order online. So I headed home. Got online and picked the 13-in Macbook Pro with the 2.53 GHz processor. It came with 4 GB of RAM (a must if you want to demo anything in Fusion). I added the 500GB drive to it. This was my whole reason for ordering it online. It you want to run a bunch of VMs on a laptop, get an external drive or the biggest internal one you can, so I did. The web site said it would ship with 2-3 days and I added expedited shipping for an additional $15. It was built and shipped in 3 days, from Shanghai. I ordered it on a Tuesday about 2pm and signed for it the following Tuesday at 10am.

I did the basic setup and then installed Fusion and ran a P2V of my old laptop. From inside Fusion I can now power up my old pc and get any info I need. I have an Airport Extreme at home now with a 1TB mybook drive attached to it. I have time machine backing up to it. One tip I can give you: if you use Fusion, exclude the VM directories from Time Machine. If you power up a VM in Fusion the vmdk (hard disk) files get updated. Time Machine is not based on block level changes, that is, it does not back up just the parts of the files that have changed. Instead, it is file based and backs up the entire file each time it gets changed. This will send a lot of data to your time machine that is not necessary. Copy them periodically to another file location but don’t let time machine get them.

So that’s where I am now. If you use a Mac and know some tricks or a great software app to use on it, please post in the comments. I’d love to hear from you. Next up, I’m setting up an entire SRM demo in Fusion on my laptop and I’ll be posting exactly how to do that in the very near future. I’ll do my best to have that done this week.
